Featured Clubs and Trainers

I am either a member, or personally know all off of the Clubs/Trainers recommended below.  There is no advertising agreement with any of them nor any exchange of goods or services.  The intent is simply to share information with you on opportunities to enjoy your training more, to improve your performance, or to meet other runners.

First Wave Tri

If you're looking for Triathlon Training, First Wave Tri is a great club.

The group is led by Kerry Simmons, a Level I Certified USAT Coach, 3 Time All-American USAT Triathlete and 3 Time Team USA World & National Team Member.

Kerry's credentials are very impressive, but don't let that intimidate you.  First Wave Tri is a great place to go if you're training for your first tri, or if you're a veteran working on improving your performance.

New Hyde Park
Runner's Club

The New Hyde Park Runners' Club is a group of people of all ages and running abilities from New Hyde Park and the surrounding communities of northwest and central Nassau County, NY.  They meet Sundays at 8:00 at Senator Michael J. Tully Park in NHP (next door to NHP Memorial H.S.) for a fun run of between 4 to 7 miles. On the third Sunday of each month they have a "bagel run and meeting", also starting at 8:00 am. In addition, there are bike rides most summer Sundays at 6:45am for those who are dealing with a running injury or want to do a little cross training. Finally, there are casual runs at 5:30 AM 4 or 5 times a week.  This club is very active and very friendly!

Brendan Donoghue

For one on one training, contact Brendan Donoghue at 917 340 0524.  Brendan is a Certified Personal Trainer who has won numerous short and long distance races.  He can work with you in person on the track, or develop a plan for you that you review together on line or over the phone.

Team Challenge

Team Challenge is the Crohn's & Colits Foundation's half marathon training program.  This life-changing fundraising event raises critical dollars to reserach a cure for digestive diseases that impact 1.4 million Americans every year.

Join now to train for the 13.1 Boston Half Marathon and Napa to Sonoma Half Marathon or the Napa to Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon.

Team in Training

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training is celebrating it's 20th anniversary this year.  This program has grown to over 380,000 participants and has a very strong following on Long Island.  Join them and train for Half Marathons, Marathons and Triathlons.

Sky Athletic Club
Pilates Studio

I recently got to try out the new Pilates Studio on Sky Athletic Club, and loved it.  You don't need to be a member of the gym and can reserve a spot for just yourself, or reserve the whole 4 person studio.  I don't know about you, but this is my idea of the perfect way to spend an hour with friends!

Peak Performance

Peak Performance has offered to do a presentation on Max VO2 testing for our Tuesday night running group.  Call Paul at Peak for more info.

 Fly With The Owls
By Mark E. Moran, Founder & CEO, Dulcinea Media, Inc.
The Fifth Annual Four Mile Run/Walk was held on Sunday morning, December 6, with more than 700 participants. On a chilly but clear day, the 5th rendition produced some of the most exciting efforts yet.
In the most thrilling finish yet, Lynbrook resident Brendan Donoghue prevailed by a mere 3 seconds over NYC resident Billy Askey, whose giant strides steadily pared Donoghue's lead in the final mile but could not quite catch him. Brendan's final time of 21:15 was the 2nd fastest Owls run, only 10 seconds behind the record set by Marco Monjardin in 2006. Donoghue's previous best finishes in his five Owls runs were a 5th place in 2007 and a 3rd place in 2008. But he cut 49 seconds off his prior best time to secure the win.
The Women's division was also exciting, with 12yo Stephanie Gerland of Garden City prevailing by 11 seconds over three-time winner Una Broderick. Gerland's final time was the 2nd fastest female winning time, only 23 seconds behind Lisa Marie Gleeson's record set in 2006.
Gerland of course set a record in the 12 and under Girls division, and her 11yo sister Stephanie also crushed the old record with a 25:37. Lynbrook's Luke Germanakos also set a record in the 12 and under Boys with a 24:49 time that was good for 12th place overall.
The Fly With The Owls was created in 2005 to encourage athletic activity among the youth of the village, and to raise funds to support healthy youth activities. Thus, the race committee was particularly heartened by the other record set by the youngest participants - a total of 80 runners in the 12 and under age group. This is a significant increase from the 44 who participated in the first running in 2005, and the number of girls in this category has tripled, from 12 to 36, over the five runnings.
On the other end of the age spectrum, a new record was established by the first nonagenarian to compete in the Owls race. Bill Benson, 90, of Valley Stream completed the course in 1:04:37. Benson is a frequent competitor in Long Island's road races and has set age group records.
The participants were blessed with the presence of four military veterans, whose presence was particularly appreciated on the day before Pearl Harbor Day.
A new tradition was launched after the race - a hot chocolate and cookies celebration at Lynbrook Runner's Stop, one of the Platinum sponsors of the race. The Saucony shoe company offered gait analysis and discounts on its merchandise to the large, appreciative crowd.

Ocean To Sound Relay - Leg 12008 Ocean To Sound Relay

The 2008 Motorola Ocean To Sound Relay was a success for the two inaugural teams for Lynbrook's own Runner's Stop. We'd like to thank all of our teammates and the many other teams that made it a truly great experience. Images are HERE.

We all run for the pure enjoyment (don't we?!), but there's nothing like the nerves that most of us get before a race. There will always be personal favorites, but upcoming we have a few that we, at Lynbook Runner's Stop, would like to put the spotlight on.

Don’t miss the NYC Half-Marathon this spring, on March 21. If you’ve qualified for guaranteed entry, you can apply February 1 to 15.
